Hattatsu Martial Arts (発育 武道) / HMA was founded in 2012 by Michael Cormack, originally the Potters Bar & Barnet branch of United Karate Association (PBB-UKA) it was renamed in 2024. Hattatsu means: continued growth, always improving. Our mission is to help each student "unfold the self". Through the practice of martial arts we enable the process of self-discovery, self-awareness, and personal growth.

At HMA we teach Karate and Kobudo.

Karate (空手), also karate-do (空手道) is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom. It developed from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts (called te (手), "hand", in Okinawan) under the influence of Chinese martial arts, particularly Fujian White Crane. Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes, and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes as well as grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints, and vital-point strikes. A karate practitioner is called a karate-ka (空手家).

We practice Shitō-ryū karate. Shitō-ryū (糸東流) is a form of karate that was founded in 1934 by Kenwa Mabuni. Shitō-ryū is synthesis of the Okinawan Shuri-te and Naha-te schools of karate and today is considered one of the four main styles of the art.

Okinawan Kobudō is a Japanese term that can be translated as "old martial way of Okinawa". It is a generic term coined in the twentieth century. Okinawan kobudō refers to the weapon systems of Okinawan martial arts. These systems can have from one to as many as a dozen weapons in their curriculum, among the bo (six foot staff), sai (three-pronged truncheon), tonfa (handled club), kama (sickle), and nunchaku (two rope- or chain-connected sticks), but also the tekko (knuckledusters), tinbe-rochin (shield and spear), and surujin (weighted chain). Less common Okinawan weapons include the tambo (short stick), the hanbō (middle length staff) and the eku (boat oar of traditional Okinawan design).

We practice Yamanni-ryū (山根流) (also Yamanni-Chinen-ryū and Yamane Ryu) Kobudo. It is a form of Okinawan kobudō whose main weapon is the bo, a non-tapered, cylindrical staff. The smaller buki, such as sai, tunfa (or tonfa), nunchaku, and kama (weapon) are studied as secondary weapons.
